Charity

I was sitting in a Caribbean Studies exam room, and after finishing the exam with lots of time left, I pondered on the life and works of my Confirmation Saint- Mother Teresa of Calcutta. I jotted down the thoughts which flowed in my mind, which I will now share with you.The paragraphs which I jotted are as follows:

"It is my wish to have the wonderful opportunity to go to countries with a significant number of less fortunate people, such as Uganda, Haiti and Calcutta, among other countries where the people live in abject poverty.

I will consider it a truly rewarding fulfilling spiritual as well as physical project to be able to reach out to such individuals who do not feel loved. I want to be a blessing to them.

So many of the poor in today's world only need a little love in order to excel. they are just like any other human being. Many are blessed with unique talents that only need to be realized, and eventually these people can contribute in changing the world.

It is my prayer that they not be despised, but uplifted and assisted, so that they may be able to realize their full potential.

Through us, the people of God, it is my prayer that they will be assisted to be shaped into the type of people that God has intended them to be.

Instead of seeing them as a shame and a burden, let us view them as a ray of sunshine, as people who can chart a course to change the world for the better, and most of all, as a blessing .

As Pope Benedict XVI stated: "Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, Each of us is loved, each of us is necessary."

Perhaps, this was a foresight as to the many charities that I engaged in later that year, to spread some light and love into the lives of the less fortunate and unloved in our society,- not in foreign countries, but in MY own country.

These charities/ missions impacted me positively, as I saw a new perspective on life. I no longer consider the homeless as "homeless and useless", I consider them as my brothers and sisters in Christ. The unloved, sick, suffering , dying, destitute and the poor now has a more profound place in my heart.

It is my prayer that we can continue to do these good works throughout our lives, to comfort, love, assist and uplift others whenever the opportunity arises. It's important to remember the words of Mother Teresa- "It is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving. May of us think that when we say "give", we mean to give financially, however, it is not always so.We can give a helping hand, a comforting word, or simply a smile. You may be astonished at how much a simple smile can uplift a poor soul and brighten their day.

May God bless us all and make our Good Works flourish.

"....And the king will answer, 'In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me." - Matthew 25:40
